Wilson Staff D7 Forged Irons Review

The reason I was first attracted to these irons was because I thought “they look like the sort of iron that would suit my game.” Having heard about the tech, the sort of player they were aimed at, the price point and exactly what they are said to offer, it really does fall in line with what I would look for in a set of irons.

Looks

Looks-wise, on the shelf, Wilson have produced an aesthetically impressive set of irons here. I certainly think that losing the blue/grey colour scheme from the D7 irons was a good decision. The Forged model just looks that little bit more premium to me, it just has more style. The new power chamber has a nice design on it that really catches the eye, making them a definite improvement from the D7 and C300 irons in this area.

Performance

Before launching into details, I want to say this clearly: I am extremely impressed with the Wilson D7 Forged irons.  Relative to its size, this is one of the most forgiving irons out there.  Also, if you like forgiveness but not offset, this is a must try.

The number one thing that makes the D7 Forged so impressive is the consistency of the ball speed and spin.  I was hitting shot after shot on a launch monitor, a wide array of good and bad swings, and the ball speed simply wasn’t moving that much.  If a flushed shot launched at 120 MPH, I was still getting 117 MPH out of a shot in the heel.  This is the #1 ingredient in consistent carry distances and more greens in regulation.

As I’ve mentioned in other iron reviews, a major issue with some modern distance irons is the lack of spin.  Wilson was cognizant of this problem, and made sure to give the D7 Forged irons plenty of stopping power.  The ball flight is still strong, but there’s enough spin to hold a green.  It’s also worth noting that the spin is extremely consistent, even when you strike it low on the face.

All this consistency plus the limited offset adds up to a set that is a pleasure to hit.  Especially in the winter, I tend to hit the shots I need to hit and get on to other things.  With the D7 Forged, I could work the ball easily and virtually every shot was good, so I just kept swinging.

The one caveat that needs to be added here, as with all stronger lofted irons, is that you need to be mindful of your gapping.  I tend to launch the ball fairly low, so I get a lot of distance out of my short and mid irons, but that tails off in the long irons.  If I were to game the D7 Forged, I would stop my set at the 5I because the 4I is only longer when I absolutely pure it.  This is true for me in virtually every set with stronger lofts.

    Great quality

What more can I say? You get what you pay for. I’m not a pro by far but do like quality items and this meets all my needs and then some. The feel & control is 2nd to none. Would for sure buy this club again

Brilliant set of clubs, like C300s only better! Good value!

These are beautiful to look at and eye-catching. They look and feel good- had a few people in our group looking them up on their phones before these were even taken out for play.

They are more compact but not in a bad way. However, they may not be the right size for beginners/high handicap. I have to say I feel that they’re more streamlined than compact. The power chamber design is just really pretty to look at, not gaudy, but not boring either. Not as fond of the power holes, but this is just kind of a Wilson thing and you just need to wipe ’em clean. D7 Forged have a great sound and feel at impact due to the urethane filling. It’s very satisfying.

These are a great set and you’d be hard-pressed to find a set with this performance for the price elsewhere.

Wilson Staff D7 Forged Golf Irons

Disclaimer: I may not be the best person to review a set of golf clubs. I do not take the game seriously, but I enjoy playing immensely. I NEVER keep score and despise playing with wanna be pros that get upset when they don’t birdie every hole. Having said that, I really like these irons. I would call these a step up set as they are not inexpensive, if fact they are up there in price. Keep in mind that you’ll spend another several hundred to complete the set, so you may have close to 2k invested when all said and done. These will replace a set of Taylor Made rac irons that are over 15 years old and in my opinion, a nice upgrade. Golf clubs are a very personal item and what I like, you may not. You simply have to go to a pro shop and hit them before making a purchase decision. I would strongly suggest trying these out.

Good value but not top of the line.

These are good, solid clubs that play well. It’s hard to say anything bad about them as they work and do what they should. I guess the term I would use is you get what you pay for. If you’re looking for more beginner clubs, these are a great place to start. If you’re looking for something more high-end to really improve your game, you might be happier investing in something more expensive.

    Very nice golf club!!

Got this Wilson D7 forged iron for my grandfather who’s a professional golf player. He hasn’t played in years but was very good when he was young. Recently he’s picking up golfing and this made a perfect gift. He really loves this forged iron. He saids the club head is small, but very impactful (very good). The weight is distributed in the head, which helps with the launch. There’s minimum offset on the head. It’s has slimmer top line. These feature makes missed very forgiving. The performance is also very good. My grandfather says his performance significantly improves using this forged iron he doesn’t feel any cavity thanks to the iron technology. Distance and speed is enhanced! (Trajectory is also increase) The filled power holes and the chamber also gives it a very nice feel. Overall, very nice golf club!!

Absolutely beautiful set/ almost too pretty to use!

So shiny and pretty that I didn’t want to use at first! But I got past that quickly and took them out to play! They work absolutely flawlessly! I’m just learning to play golf so I’m far from an expert but from what I’ve seen, these are high-quality irons and are doing an absolutely fabulous job! I’ve gotten several compliments on them while out on the course! Many guys have wanted to check them out and know what they are. Definitely, a must-have set if this is the price range you’re looking for.
